Beware of the companies that appear to be New Zealand but are based overseas.

This can be very costly as you can see from the 2 examples above. Those companies go to great lengths to misinform their customers. For example, they advertise New Zealand telephone numbers, use the New Zealand flag and/or they show prices in New Zealand dollars. However, the reality is that they are not located in New Zealand so they will be shipping the products from overseas. When you receive your order you will be hit with a large bill from the freight company.

Overseas shopping check list

Make sure to ask if they are an New Zealand company

Their advertised price DOES NOT have GST, import duty or customs fees

Most banks charge 4% international transaction fee on all overseas purchases

Any parcel worth over $1,000 NZD triggers GST, import duty and customs fees

Lowering the declared value is illegal and leaves you with a lower insurance value

Extra 5% import duty is always charged to all jewellery arriving in New Zealand

GST is calculated not just on the declared value, but also on the 5% import duty, shipping and insurance cost.
